AIR AND UNDERWATER MUSEUM
Beneath the Aegean
Sea is an unexplored world containing as yet untold wonders, and because
recreational diving is now permitted for the first time, treasure may still
be found. Suspended in time are the wrecks of the entire Persian
fleet, which was sunk in shallow waters right outside Chios Island in the
Dodecanese Islands. Also
in that area, one of the seven wonders of the world, the Colossus of Rhodes,
collapsed right outside the port of Rhodes. Several cities of the
ancient Minoan civilization have gone under water as the coastline of Crete
changed millenia ago, and ruins of legendary Atlantis
may be discovered in the volcanic vents of Santorini. Artifacts are
scattered throughout the region, and are yet to be found in the virgin
waters of the Aegean.
BRITANNIC
The wreck of the Brittanic, sister
ship to the Titanic, is located just off the coast of Athens, and many
more ships dating back thousands of years, or lost during this century
during the world wars, have still to be uncovered. This vast sea shelters
the remains of an underwater museum in the making, and you can be part
of this great voyage of discovery.
ON
LAND
Topside, Greece abounds with treasures that have been preserved since the
time of Alexander the Great. Visit the remains of ancient temples
like the Acropolis, or ancient towns like that found on Kos, the island
where Pythagoras, the great mathemetician, lived. Mosaics, pillars,
partial walls and floors are preserved in their natural state where you
are free to climb on them and imagine how it felt to live in this other
world.
